About the presenters:
François Desmarais, Vice President, Trade & Industry Affairs, Canadian Steel Producers Association
François Desmarais joined the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA) in 2024, where he currently serves as Vice President, Trade and Industrial Affairs. François has many years of experience in government relations, trade policy, and public affairs, gained in highly regulated and politically sensitive sectors.
He has a strong track record in influencing public policy decisions and managing geopolitical and reputational risks, having worked with major international consortia in the defence and transportation sectors. He has also developed extensive expertise in public policy over more than a decade with various government organizations, including the Office of the Minister of Industry, the Senate of Canada, and the National Assembly of Quebec, as well as internationally with the European Commission and Canadian missions to the OSCE and the European Union.
With a bachelor’s degree in political science and a certificate in German studies from the University of Montreal, as well as a master’s degree in political science from Laval University, François is fluent in French, English and German.
Joy Nott
, Partner, Trade & Customs, KPMG Canada
Prior to joining the KPMG Trade and Customs Practice in July 2018 as Partner, Joy Nott was President and CEO of the Canadian Importers and Exporters Association (I.E.Canada) for 8 years. Joy has over 30 years of experience in customs compliance having started her career in Montreal work for over 10 years for well known customs brokers/freight forwarders giving her hands on operational experience. She has also worked for global accounting firms and large US based banks before returning to KPMG as a partner in 2018.
In her role at I.E.Canada, Joy sat on various Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) working groups and provided input on various program and policies from the design phase through to implementation by the CBSA. Joy continues to sit on the CBSA Border Commercial Consultative Committee (BCCC) in an advisory capacity.
Joy has sat on various committees as advisors to Federal Ministers and has testified before both the House of Commons and Senate Committees on International trade on matters directly impacting Canadian importers and exporters.
Joy is a frequent commentator on BNN, CTV and CBC television on matters of trade and supply chain.
Joy’s credentials include a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec in 1987. She later sought and received honours when writing for her qualified customs brokers’ status in 1990. In 1993, Joy gained her professional customs brokerage status. In 2011, Joy gained her P.Log designation (Professional Logistician).
