Join the US Chapter of CILTNA and Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology on Monday, November 25 at 6 pm ET/ 5 pm CT/ 3 pm PT/ 11 pm GMT for a 60-minute webinar, “CAREERS IN AVIATION – A LOOK AT THE IMPORTANT ROLE VAUGHN COLLEGE HAS IN DEVELOPING THE NEXT GENERATION OF PROFESSIONALS”.

Vaughn College is one of North America’s leading centers for educational and career development in the aviation industry. A panel representing leaders, lecturers, alumni and students from the college will discuss the opportunities Vaughn offers for anyone seeking to hire qualified candidates or to obtain careers, or career professional development, in aviation. A must attend for anyone looking for careers or employees in any aspect of the aviation world.

Dr. Sharon DeVivo, President and CEO

Dr. Sharon B. DeVivo has been with Vaughn College since 1996 and president since 2014. She is the seventh president of the institution and the first woman. Vaughn is ranked as the number one institution in the nation in upward mobility and is the best at moving students from the bottom 40 percent to the top 40 percent in income.

Her strategic objective is to create a transformative educational experience inside and outside the classroom. She has led three strategic planning efforts that have helped to move the College from primarily a training institution to one that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in aviation, engineering, management and technology. Vaughn serves a diverse student body of about 1,200 students who are more than 80 percent minority, mostly first-generation Americans and first-generation college students.

Dr. DeVivo was appointed by the US Secretary of Transportation to serve as the chair of the Youth Access to American Aviation Jobs Task Force which provided Congress in fall 2022 with recommendations on how to bring youth, particularly those who are underrepresented, to aviation and aerospace. She also serves on the board of Civil Air Patrol, Federal Aviation Administration’s Management Advisory Council, Council for Higher Education Accreditation, The Wings Club Foundation, Cradle of Aviation Museum, the Greater New York Councils Boy Scouts of America, International Aviation Women’s Association Advisory Board, Council for Independent Colleges and Universities, the Policy Committee of the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities, and as a liaison to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers’ (IEEE) Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee.

She is the daughter of a US Navy Master Chief and lived around the world while growing
up. Her degrees include an associate’s from the University of Maryland in Munich, Germany, a bachelor’s from the State University of New York at Albany, a master’s from Fordham University and a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania.

Loretta Alkalay, Esq., Adjunct Faculty

Loretta Alkalay is an aviation attorney and regulatory consultant, specializing in issues related to compliance with federal aviation regulations including drone rules.

Loretta is also an adjunct professor at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology where she teaches drone laws, aviation safety and other courses both in New York and abroad. She has taught for Vaughn in joint degree programs with universities in Hyderabad, India and in Shanghai, China. Previously, she was an attorney for the Federal Aviation Administration for over 30 years, more than 20 of those years as Regional Counsel in New York.

Ms. Alkalay holds a B.A. from Cornell University, cum laude and with distinction, and a J.D. from the NYU School of Law. She holds an FAA remote pilot certificate with sUAS rating.

Chaundra Daniels, Director of Career Services

Chaundra Daniels provides the guidance and structure for a range of student services offered by career services and oversees all office operations on career development strategies. She has over 25 years working as a seasoned professional with a diverse background in the corporate, healthcare, higher education, and nonprofit sectors. An advocate for equity, diversity, and inclusion, she has worked as a job coach, job developer, career counselor, and project manager. She has written award winning grants and developed successful initiatives to assist students, to become more independently involved with their career planning endeavors while securing purposeful employment. Chaundra is an enthusiastic and resourceful administrator. She offers a unique communication style with the ability to successfully engage employers and motivate students through critical thinking. She has a fond appreciation of butterflies and uses their symbolic nature of “transformation” as part of her message in providing inspiration.

Otha Ward, Adjunct Faculty and Supervisor, Airport Taxi Operations, PANYNJ

Otha started working at the Port Authority in 2019 as an Airport Operations Agent. Due to his dedication and hard work, he has progressed through the ranks and was most recently an airport operations Group Supervisor in JFK Landside Operations.

Otha holds a Master of Public Administration in Global Transportation Management from Fairleigh Dickinson University and a Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management from Vaughn College of Aeronautics. He is also a Certified Member (CM) of the American Association of Airport Executives.

Dr. Jonathan Sypek, Assistant Professor, Engineering and Technology

Jonathan Sypeck is an Assistant Professor of Engineering and Technology at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Vaughn College in 2013, and his Master of Engineering degree from CUNY City College in 2015. He specializes in the fields of Computational Methods and Finite Element Analysis, while also teaching courses in Computer Aided Design and Aircraft Design. He is currently pursuing his PhD in Engineering Education at SUNY Stony Brook.

Elvira Pereyaslov, Student, President of the AAAE Student Chapter

Elvira Pereyaslov is a first-generation college student from Eastern Europe majoring in Airline Management at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, New York, USA. Passionate about aviation, and eager to learn, she leverages her diverse background to add value wherever she goes. She is currently interning with The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at LaGuardia Airport in Landside Operations and Customer Experience. She has previous experience with the Terminal Operator, LaGuardia Gateway Partners, in Terminal Operations.

Dr. Maxine Lubner, Professor and Chair

Dr. Maxine Lubner is a Professor and Chair of the Management and formerly, Aviation, Departments at Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, New York City. Previously, Dr. Lubner was appointed as Executive Director of the City University of New York (CUNY) Aviation Institute at York College and as a faculty member at New York University’s Graduate School of Social Work. She has conducted research in the areas of aviation safety, human factors, and aviation education. She holds an FAA Private Pilot Certificate. She obtained an undergraduate B.A. in Psychology and a graduate B.A. (Hons) in Counseling Psychology, from the University of Cape Town, South Africa. She earned her M. Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in Sociomedical Sciences from Columbia University, New York.
